Bob’s Thanksgiving Saturday at St. Lawrence Market

Thanksgiving Saturday morning at St. Lawrence Market is a story in motion — a chorus of voices, sizzling sounds, and the rhythm of Toronto preparing for a long weekend feast. Bob wandered through the market, camera in hand, watching the people who make this tradition come alive: the workers behind the counters.

The Heart of the Market

Each vendor was a character in their own Thanksgiving story. At the seafood counter, one worker in a crisp white coat and blue cap sliced salmon with the precision of a craftsman, the smell of saltwater and freshness rising from the counter. Nearby, another worker handled the register with a calm focus, greeting regulars who knew him by name. The hum of conversation mixed with the clinking of knives and scales.

The Butchers and the Smoke

Bob’s camera caught the butchers under the warm lights, carving ribs and roasts for families planning their Sunday dinners. The air was rich with the aroma of smoked meat, sweet barbecue sauce, and roasted garlic. A woman at one counter sliced into a rack of ribs while a young man beside her wrapped orders with speed born of long weekends like this one. Everyone seemed to know their place in the dance — cut, weigh, wrap, smile, repeat.

The Familiar Faces

At another stall, a woman in an orange cap ladled sauce over a steaming tray of ribs, her hands moving confidently as she filled takeout boxes. Across the aisle, a young chef at Buster’s Sea Cove leaned on the counter and grinned for Bob’s camera — the kind of easy grin that says he’s proud of what he serves. Behind him, the lunch crowd was already lining up for fish sandwiches and calamari.

Thanksgiving Energy

There was something special in the air that morning — a mix of anticipation and gratitude. These were the people who kept the market alive, who gave the city its flavor, one slice and one smile at a time. While others were still thinking about their turkeys and pies, they were already deep in the work that makes Thanksgiving happen.

Bob didn’t have his coffee that morning, but the energy of the market was enough to keep him awake. The workers were his story — each one adding a note to the song of Thanksgiving Saturday at St. Lawrence Market.
