Bob Rides the UP Express: A Fast Track to Downtown

Every time he looks out the window of the Union Pearson Express, he’s reminded how much easier life is when you can get from home to Union Station in just 30 minutes — no gridlock, no subway crowds, no stress. Just smooth rails and a quiet train car.

The UP Express has become Bob’s shortcut to the heart of Toronto. He likes how the train hums to life, the seats are clean, and there’s always enough space to sit back with his camera bag beside him. Out the window, the city slowly builds up — from the suburbs to the skyline — and by the time Bob’s checking his watch, he’s already at Union Station.

At the terminal, the modern architecture and bright lighting make him feel like he’s in a city that’s moving forward. He walks through the sleek hallways toward the glass exit, watching travelers with suitcases heading the opposite direction toward Pearson Airport. Bob thinks it’s funny — some are flying out, while he’s just arriving to explore.

For him, this isn’t just a commute — it’s the first step of a photo walk.

The train gives him time to think, to look out the window and plan which streets he’ll wander that day. Whether he’s headed to Kensington Market, the waterfront, or St. Lawrence Market, the UP Express gets him downtown fast enough to catch the morning light — the best time for street photography.

No honking cars. No packed subway cars. Just a quiet, 30-minute ride that starts his story of the day.
