Bob at the School on Labour Day

Labour Day morning had a quiet stillness to it, the kind of calm that only comes before a new season begins. While most people were enjoying one last long weekend of summer, Bob decided to wander over to the local school—St. Marcellus Catholic School—to see how it looked before the students came rushing back through the gates.

The playground sat empty, the painted games on the pavement waiting for the first squeals of laughter and running footsteps. The four-square court looked freshly marked, and Bob could almost hear the arguments over who got to serve first.

Out front, the Canadian flag hung proudly in the breeze, standing tall over an empty yard. The picnic tables beneath the trees were silent now, but in just a day, they’d be surrounded by kids trading snacks and stories about their summer adventures.

Walking around to the back, Bob noticed the ball diamond and the soccer nets, both patiently waiting for recess games and after-school practices. Even the school building itself seemed to be waiting—windows lined with fresh reflections, doors locked for just one more day of summer.

Bob smiled, thinking about how the first day of school always carries a mix of excitement and nerves. For the kids, it means new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new pair of shoes. For parents, it means the return of busy mornings, packed lunches, and homework checks. And for the school itself, it means another year of memories waiting to be made.

As he stood there, the sun warm on his shoulders, Bob felt the energy of the year ahead already buzzing in the air. Tomorrow, the stillness would be broken. Tomorrow, the schoolyard would come alive again.

Labour Day, Bob thought, really is the pause before the play button is pressed.
